Ocotillo grows commonly on rocky slopes west of the Pecos. If a stem is cut and stuck in the ground, it will root and grow well. In Mexico we have seen them used for living fences around the house and yard; in West Texas they are sometimes used for walls in buildings, the dead stems held together in an upright position. West Texas. April–July. Perennial.

FUMARIACEAE

Fumitory or Bleeding-Heart Family

Many botanists unite this family with the Poppy family. It has finely divided leaves and bilaterally symmetrical flowers. Petals are in 2 pairs, with one or both of the outer pair having a sac, or spur, at the base. There are 2 sepals and 6 stamens.
